Brother Knights and Greetings

Allow me to share a story about branding, advertising, and the power of association. For over 40 years, I have worked in the advertising industry, helping businesses shape their message and present themselves to the world. Even now, as your Grand Knight, it remains my full time job.
What always strikes me is this: being associated with a brand isn’t just about logos or

slogans—it’s about how that brand makes you feel. Pride, purpose, belonging—these are the true marks of a strong identity.
While serving burgers this summer at the Cascade Lakes relay, several participants noticed our branding and asked what the Knights of Columbus were all about. That simple question opened the door to share our mission, goals, and values. Again, while serving burgers at the regional lacrosse tournament, many visitors recognized our logo and shared stories about the Knights back home, or about fathers and grandfathers who had been members.
One woman, wishing to remain anonymous, quietly placed three crisp hundred-dollar bills in our donation jar and told us to “keep doing what you do”. Just last month, while on the coast wearing my Knights of Columbus hoodie, a man waiting in line beside me simply asked: “Knights of Columbus—what council are you in?”
These moments remind us that our “brand” is not just a name or an emblem—it’s the witness of Catholic men serving their communities. At our most recent Exemplification, I shared this same story with those in attendance. If it hasn’t already happened to you, it will. One day you’ll be wearing something with a Knights logo, and someone will stop you to say something positive, uplifting, and encouraging about who we are. Or perhaps you’ll be out of town and see someone else wearing our shield, and you’ll instantly share a bond of fraternity.
So I ask you: how does it make you feel to be a Knight of Columbus? When you put on that badge, when you serve alongside your brothers, when you represent our Order in the parish or community—what sense of purpose fills your heart?
That is our “brand.” Not the words on a banner or the title in a program, but the lived experience of Catholic men united in charity, unity, and fraternity. Let us continue to live out that brand boldly, so that when others see us, they don’t just recognize the Knights of Columbus—they feel inspired to join us.
Vivat Jesus!
